OEM Ford Brake Pads
Your Ford can only stop if its brake calipers clamp its brake rotors and produce the necessary friction to slow its wheels and tires. They can't cause that friction, however, without OEM brake pads.
The Types of Brake Pads
There are four. Organic brake pads are for ordinary daily driving. They're cost-effective, dependable friction generators, they don't wear out rotors as quickly, and they produce very little dust. Ceramic brake pads, however, last a little longer. They work well in hot or cold weather, make very little noise, and the dust they create resists sticking to wheels. Metallic brake pads perform even better. They continue to work well at high heat, offer a firmer feel when you brake, and resist fading. Carbon fiber brake pads are the ultimate in durability and functionality. They work superiorly at high temperatures and deliver the most and best stopping power. Cars and SUVs can use any of these, but, since ceramic and carbon fiber scatter heat best, sports cars and performance vehicles use them most often.
When to Replace Your Brake Pads
When to change brake pads varies according to how and where you drive. There are signs that brake pads are worn or going bad, though, and they go well beyond a brake warning light. Look for damaged surfaces, listen for brake whines, and feel for longer stopping times. The worst symptoms, though: vibration and grinding. They indicate uneven pad wear because of warped rotors and real-time rotor damage, respectively. Otherwise, replace brake pads about every 40,000 or 50,000 miles. The best way to detect brake problems is to do an inspection.
