The Ford Explorer line of SUVs replaced the outgoing Ford Bronco II in 1991. Early on, the model came in XL, XLT, Sport, and Eddie Bauer trims, each of which had a 4.0-liter V6 engine capable of 145 horsepower. A five-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive (RWD) came standard, and a four-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive (4WD) were available.
In 1996, you could get a 5.0-liter V8 engine, and a Limited trim became available. By the late 1990s, the two-door variant of the SUV would split off from its four-door sibling, getting renamed Ford Explorer Sport for a time. In 1997, a five-speed auto gearbox became an option, and by 2007, features would include not only air conditioning, auxiliary rear climate control, and adjustable pedals but also perks like fog lights, a choice among several wheel sizes, and more.
Skip ahead to the 2021 model year, and trims would range from base, XLT, and Limited to King Ranch, Platinum, and ST. An off-road Timberline variant would be offered as well, not to mention a hybrid model. You could get either a turbocharged I4 or a twin-turbo V6 engine, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, and rear-wheel drive would come standard. Options would vary even more widely, with some trims offering alloy wheels and keyless entry and ignition and others offering sport-tuned suspensions and adaptive LED headlights. There would even be several options packages available.
